The 316 marked the entry into BMW's 3-series upon introduction of the series in 1975. As a successor to the 1602 it had an 1.6 litre engine with (Solex) carburettor and produced 90 DIN hp. It was succeeded by the 316 (1.8) in September 1978 which incorporated the 1.8 litre engine previously installed in the 318.
