In 1976 BMW introduced a new art form - commissioned art painted directly onto succesful BMWs of the period.

First off was Alexander Calder who painted a 3.0 CSL (Batmobile). Then Frank Stella painted another 3.0 CSL which was succesfully raced.

For the third BMW Art Car Roy Lichtenstein was called upon in 1977 to design an extra-ordinary art work for a 320 racing car. He envisioned transforming the sensation of speed set against a yellow sun rising over a stretch of black road intercut by white stripes.
